Q: So, it looks like 8 people didn’t finish the race. Is that pretty common? What usually happens that makes someone drop out (besides an accident)?

A: Several of the 8 who didn’t finish didn’t plan to finish, according to Kathy McDaris, race director. She said several of them had injuries that prevented them from finishing the entire race, but they had registered and planned for the event, so they did what they could and then stopped. One person had to stop because of a mechanical problem with his or her bike, she said. We don’t know if anyone dropped because the event simply got the better of them.

=====
Q: Please explain more about the penalties. Does an official see the drafting, or does someone report a competitor for doing that? What are the other three penalties (overtaken, position, unauthorized assistance).

A: USA Triathlon officials travel the course during all USAT-sanctioned events, patrolling for violations (or, stated more positively, promoting fair racing). Only violations of USAT rules witnessed by a race official will result in a penalty. Drafting seems to be the most common violation. For example, of the 10 penalties issued in 2011 Red Hills Triathlon, six were for drafting. A link to USAT rules appears below, but in general, drafting occurs when a cyclist approaches another from behind, gets within 3 bike lengths of the leading cyclist, but fails to pass. Once a cyclist enters the 3-bike-length zone, he or she must pass the leading cyclist within 15 seconds or fall back out of that zone until he or she is ready to try to pass again.

“Overtaken” is when a leading cyclist has been passed but fails to fall back out of the 3-bike-length zone. Once passed, the passed cyclist has an affirmative duty to fall back before trying to regain a position.

“Position” is when a cyclist hogs the road, such as staying to the left even when not passing. All cyclists are supposed to stay right except when passing.

“Unauthorized Assistance” is receiving some kind of tangible support from a spectator. It can range from having a family member step out and pace a competitor during a run, to someone handing a GU to a runner at a place other than an aid station (and from an aid station volunteer), to taking off a shirt and handing it to a passerby. USAT stresses that triathlon is an individual sport, and no assistance of any kind is allowed except at aid stations from volunteers.

See all the USAT rules here: http://www.usatriathlon.org/about-multisport/rulebook.aspx.
========
Q: Can you make me as fast as Seeley Gutierrez?

A: Sure. No problem.

Hey there. I see the runners were listed in Rob’s great article but I wanted to personally say thank you to Stephanie Weyant who was patrolling the Trail and to all the service station GWTRIC members who supported us. I hope Ron or Kathy will post all their names so they are also recognized. I’m pretty sure I lingered there much longer than they would have liked but we all suffer in our own way Thank you to all.
