Gulf Winds Triathletes Dominate Fields at Beach Blast Sprint and Intermediate Triathlons
by Rob McNeely
April 30, 2012 (T
allahassee) – Fifty-one (corrected number) Gulf Winds Triathletes competed in the Beach Blast Sprint and Intermediate Triathlons on April 28, 2012, in Mexico Beach, Florida. The Club dominated the field, too. Members earned 35 medals, including: female overall first place in the sprint; female overall first and second in the intermediate; men's first in the Master's division in both races, and third in the men's Masters sprint division; 14 age-group first place awards; eight age-group seconds; six age-group thirds; and firsts in both an Athena and Clydesdale division.
Two Tri Club members earned first place age-group awards in the duathlon, and their combined ages were 145 years old.
Marci Gray ran away with first place in the women’s Sprint Triathlon (.35-mile swim, 15-mile bike ride, 5K run), finishing in 1:17:06, four minutes and fifty seconds ahead of second place. While winning the women’s division, her effort was also fast enough to finish fifth overall out of both the men and the women. Gray ran the second fastest 5K of the day, male or fe
male, at 21:52 (7:02/mile). Melanie Leitman brought another podium finish to the Tri Club, finishing second behind Gray at 1:21:56 and 17 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.
In the Interme
diate race (.7-mile swim, 25-mile bike ride, 10K), Jennifer Kilinski destroyed the female field, finishing a full 6:50 in front of second place at 2:10:24,. Kilinski’s effort also earned her a 6th place overall finish among the men and women. Kilinksi posted the fastest female swim time (17:06), averaged 22.2 m.ph. on the bike, and clocked a 6:52 per mile pace to finish the 10K in 42:39.
On the me
n’s side, the Tri Club captured three of the six podium positions in the Master’s division between both races. Jeff Bowman (1:15:51) and Eric Baumer (1:20:26) took first and third, respectively, in the Sprint. Tony Guillen (2:09:17) won the male Master’s division in the Intermediate distance by 13 seconds on the strength of a 38:57 10K, an average pace of 6:16/mile.
In the Sprint Duathlon (1.5-mile run, 15-mile bike ride, 5K), Richard Hammock, 67, won first place in the men’s 65 - 69 division in 1:49:18, and Bob Keller, 78, won the men’s 75-79 division, finishing in 2:01:57 and nearly 14 minutes ahead of second place.
